Ep 7: How to approach a new idea
I discuss the danger of thinking out loud and how to avoid pitfalls by following our step-by-step process for discussing new ideas with your employees. This is the third episode of four on the theme of retail management communication; it was preceded by episodes on the dangers of asking employees for favors and on differences of opinion, and will be followed by an episode on minimizing feelings of overwhelm.

In this episode:

  • I share a story illustrating how I learned the hard way that thinking out loud can create disappointment because you haven’t gone in with a process and a plan
  • The archetypes I’ve identified among retail leaders and how they manage collaboration differently
  • The danger of thinking out loud by triggering action without understanding the challenges ahead
  • What these challenges could look like
  • What questions the different archetypes should consider before triggering action
  • A four-step process to go through when you have an idea, before jumping into action

The sky’s the limit; no idea is left off the table.

I absolutely advocate getting ideas from others.

The danger of thinking out loud is when we've triggered action when we don't yet understand the challenges ahead.
