Ep 4: Setting employees up for success
I talk about strategies for retaining and re-training employees to show them that they’re important to us, bolster their morale, and set them up for success. This episode also addresses performance corrections and terminations, but my focus is prevention. This is the third episode of three on the theme of employee development, and was preceded by episodes on the hiring process and training approaches.

In this episode:

  • The many factors that can contribute to employee satisfaction
  • Speaking to your employee’s motivations when laying out goals and targets
  • How your leadership style and the ways you interact with employees contribute to retention
  • Ways to promote consistent employee development and how that evolves over time
  • The elements of meaningful praise
  • What you need to think about when giving meaningful feedback
  • The components to have in place ahead of time in order to give effective performance reviews
  • Setting effective goals using the SMART acronym
  • Preparing employees for a promotion or new role with a training plan, training calendar, and feedback
  • Making transitions over time in order to set employees up for success
  • Imposing consequences or taking corrective action when we’re not getting the performance we expect from an employee
  • The important feedback we can gain from an exit interview when an employee does leave
  • How to structure an exit interview
  • Taking stock of how effective and realistic our employee development process has been
